Sogndal and Sognefjord

Learn more about our beautiful region!

The Sognefjord, nicknamed the “King of the Fjords” for a good reason, is the second longest and deepest fjord in the world. Located in the Norwegian province of Vestland, the region also boasts gigantic glaciers and high mountains. A magical natural landscape with countless sights, such as the Nærøyfjord (part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site), various unique stave churches, the Jostedal Glacier, impressive waterfalls and much more.

At the heart of this region lies Sogndal. To be precise, Sogndal refers to the entire municipality, which also includes among others Leikanger or Balestrand. With a total of almost 12,200 inhabitants, it is the largest municipality in the Sogn landscape and also the economic and cultural centre. Flagships and pride of the entire region are – apart from our beloved football club of course – the campus of the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences and Norway's leading producer of fruit drinks “Lerum”. With regard to the latter, it is no coincidence that Sogndal is known as “Saftbygda” (juice town) and our official fan club is called “Saftkokaradn” (juice cookers/makers). The university on the other side the “Høgskulen på Vestlandet” abbreviated as HVL (in English Western Norway University of Applied Sciences) is one of the largest educational institutions in the country, with about 16,500 students in total, and consists of three faculties: 1 Education, Arts and Sports, 2 Health and Social Sciences, 3 Technology, Environmental and Social Sciences. The campus in Sogndal is one five (the others are Bergen, Førde, Haugesund and Stord), which means that the entire university stretches over 400 kilometers on the western coast of Norway. More information and an overview of the numerous attractions in the region and Sogndal itself can be found on the “Visit Sognefjord” website:
